Development of the Software Process Improvement Network Chapter The Software Engineering Institute has authorized The Quality Assurance Institute (QAI) to form a SPIN chapter. This will be the first SPIN chapter to be formed in the Gulf Region. Please follow this link to view the current listing Emirates Spin. What are the benefits of a SPIN chapter? The benefits of a SPIN are the opportunity to network with peers in other organizations to share ideas and experiences. These factors have kept organizations like ACM and IEEE in business all of these years and are driving the creation of SPINs all over the world. Because software process improvement is a new and rapidly growing area, the opportunity to interact with other professionals with the same interest is invaluable. The SPIN can bring together groups of people for mutual benefit: organizations improving their processes, consultants and organizations that provide process-related services and products, academic researchers, and relevant government agencies. Another area of benefit is shared training and costs. The SPIN can organize events on topics of mutual interest, including seminars on new tools or techniques. Costs for external expertise are kept low by sharing them amongst SPIN members and sponsors. What is a Software Process Improvement Network? A Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) is an organization of software professionals in a given geographical area who are interested in software process improvement. Each regional SPIN is slightly different, based on the vision of the founders and the needs of the community. The Software Process Improvement Network chapters are supported by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), Carnegie Mellon University (www.sei.cmu.edu/). The SEI mission is to provide leadership in advancing the state of the practice of software engineering to improve the quality of systems that depend on software. The SEI accomplishes this mission by promoting the evolution of software engineering from an ad hoc, labor-intensive activity to a discipline that is well managed and supported by technology. The SEI exerts no control over any of the organizations. Each SPIN is completely independent. The SEI does, however, provide support in many ways. The most significant manner is by enabling communication between SPIN chapters and possible participants and among regional SPIN chapters. By creating, maintaining, and distributing a SPIN Directory, SEI is able to connect many software professionals with emerging or existing SPINs. The SEI SPIN coordinator can also arrange for members of the SEI technical staff to speak at SPIN meetings.
